The vibrant and bustling neighborhood occupying the upper reaches of Manhattan has been at the crossroads of the artistic, literary, and political currents of the African-American community since the early days of the twentieth century.Home to writers and revolutionaries, artists and agitators, Harlem has been both subject and inspiration for countless photographers. This sweeping photographic survey includes nearly two hundred images that tell the story of Harlem - its distinctive landscape and extraordinary inhabitants - throughout the twentieth century. Featured artists include: Gordon Parks, James VanDerZee, Eve Arnold, Alice Attie, Cornell Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon, Dawoud Bey, Chester Higgins, Jr., Helen Levitt, Aaron Siskind, Bruce Davidson, Roy DeCarava, Leonard Freed, Carl Van Vechten, and Weegee. The book features essays by leading scholars of African-American studies and art - including Deborah Willis, Cheryl Finley, Elizabeth Alexander, and Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. - which are paired with the work of eighty artists and photographers, affording this enclave the richest chronicling in its history.

About the Author
Thelma Golden is director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem. Deborah Willis is a professor of Africana studies at New York University. Cheryl Finley is associate professor of art and African American studies at Cornell University. Elizabeth Alexander is an American poet, essayist, and professor.

Harlem: A Century in Images
Text by Deborah Willis, Cheryl Finley and Elizabeth Alexander, Introduction by Thelma Golden

Pub Date: October 19, 2010

Format: Hardcover

Category: Photography - Collections, Catalogs, Exhibitions

Publisher: Skira Rizzoli

Trim Size: 9 x 10-1/4

US Price: $55.00

CAN Price: $65.00

ISBN: 978-0-8478-3335-1

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/03/13/books/review/13glover-slide-show.html

Liz Andrews, performance artist and arts administrator. The exhibition will open with a reception March 12, 2010, 6 - 9PM at the Renaissance Fine Art Gallery located at 2075 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd, Harlem, New York. Exhibition Dates: March 12 - April 10, 2010.Girl Talk is a presentation of photographs, paintings, film, jewelry and quilted pieces exploring the themes of imposed identity, beauty, tradition and self-definition. The title of the show is inspired by the song "Girl Talk" by Dakota Staton. "Her rendition of "Girl Talk" reminds us of the importance of women sharing stories and telling histories. The history of women in this nation is comprised of a multitude of stories, struggles and successes." Willis declares.Through their artistic works, the eight women represented in Girl Talk honor and extend the narratives of many women. "It is a celebration and an opportunity for reflection about those who give and sustain life with their bodies, spirits and voices," says Andrews. The artists include: Ifetayo Abdus-Salam, a photographer whose work prompts contemplation of the notion of power, sexuality and identity; Micaela Anaya, a painter influenced by Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali who will feature portrait pieces with a deliberate political; Delphine Fawundu-Buford, a photographer, will show portraits emblematic of the song Four Women by the iconic Nina Simone; Anna Maria Horsford, better known as a television and film actor, will present jewelry and adornment designs; Letitia Huckaby, a photographer and journalist, uses quilts to create intimate narratives that reflect the cultural history of African Americans;
Melvina Lathan, the first female licensed Boxing Judge in New York and artist who uses fiber to create works whose subjects range from history to contemporary culture; Carla Williams, a writer and photographer who will present portraits capturing images of femininity and
Kathe Sandler, an award winning independent documentary filmmaker who explores race, gender, culture, identity, and history.

Their images provide the world with human rights evidence, put faces onto a conflict, document the struggles and defiance of marginalized people, reframe how issues are discussed publicly, and provide opportunities for reflection and discussion.

My entry exemplifies this submission category: “images that reframe mainstream media representations of African American men and boys.” Two distinct groups of black men in Harlem were chosen for this project. The first represents black men that are easily identifiable as employed or involved in constructive activities in a variety of occupations. The second represents young black men standing in front of their building where they reside but could too easily fit the stereotype: unemployable or involved in crime if they were on a street corner. For example there is a photograph of street entrepreneurial photographer, a community football coach and church member that are positive black males. The project’s social meaning is to draw a clear connection to the black males but the significant difference between the two groups: is the means to obtain a job or participation in a positive activity.

No one — almost no one — is wishing for a return of row upon row of boarded-up buildings or the summer mornings when lifeless bodies turned up in vestibules, or the evenings when every block seemed to have its own band of drug dealers and subordinate crackheads. But residents say they do miss having a neighborhood with familiar faces to greet, familiar foods to eat, and no fear of being forced out of their homes. It was Dr. Mindy Fullilove, a professor of clinical psychiatry and public health at Columbia University, who called the feeling “root shock” because, she said, its effects are similar to what happens to uprooted plants. She describes it as “the pain of losing one’s beloved neighborhood.”The psychological hold Harlem has on African-Americans has endured even as the neighborhood’s devolution became so complete that between about 1960 and 1990, Harlem had lost a third of its population and half of its housing stock." .Mixed Feelings as Change Overtakes 125th St. The New York Times, June 13, 2008
